Day 07 – Least favorite plot device employed by way too many books you actually enjoyed otherwise

This may actually be more of a television writing thing these days, but a plot device I am totally disenchanted with is the one where your hero/heroine is  stripped of everyone/everything important to them.  Trials and tribulations (ala Job or Hercules, or Percy Jackson and Harry Potter) are supposed to test our heroes and allow for personal growth, not to diminish or wear them down.

Even Hercules got his reward in the end and made a few friends along the way.

I can’t actually think of any recent book examples of how I don’t like this plot device, but in terms of television, Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Captain Jack Harkness come to mind as characters I’ve loved who keep getting broken down by the people who write them.  If I was reading books about them, I would stop because the hopelessness would be suffocating.

For those keeping track… the master list of these questions is here.

Had the most delightfully borderline r-rated dream last night, starring our very own Gibbs/DiNozzo.

It involved them investing a death at a vacation resort and a time share scam. At one point, they get mistaken for a couple looking to get a time share, and have to act the part by being... affectionate.

*eyes it*

There are loopholes, naturally. Like why they would need to be affectionate in front of the resort employee giving them the tour of the cabins, but it worked in the dream. And there was lots of kisses and touches.

*happy sigh*

I love dreams like that, don't you?

Last night, [ profile] azarsuerte and I were chatting, while working on our [ profile] au_bigbang fics and helping each other fnd something that passes for titles. She's writing Dr. Who and I'm doing a bigger fic set in my Immortal!Gibbs universe.

Stayed up til almost 2am (EST, my time but not for her), and then I said good night, got a shower and went to bed.

Ony to have dreams of Immortal Gibbs and his friend/lover,Tony DiNozzo, looking for the Doctor (who, as it turns out is an old friend of Gibbs) in a squalor-ridden third world town - in which a 4 year old boy has been 'ruling' the town like a dictator because he's possessed by some kind of ... other worldly something. The other worldly somethng has given the boy knowledge of the Doctor, and he, in turn, has the entire very frightened town looking for him, too.

If ony I wrote actual Dr. Who fic. This would be awesome as a crossover. Which group would find the Doctor in time? Could Gibbs convince the townsfolk that the Doctor would rid them of their pint-sized dictator? Is Jack traveling with the Doctor and if yes, is he still pining for poor Ianto or ready to bounce back by flirting with Tony. Will Gibbs head slap him for daring such chicanery?

The plot for my [ profile] au_bigbang fic has finally revealed itself to me!  I was afraid I was going to have to bow out, but whee!  Plot+Beginnings of an Outline... I HAZ IT!!!!!

*grabs Gibbs and kisses him soundly*

Well, I've spent most of the day in bed, being REALLY sick.

Since I'm mostly okay, though, and kind of awake now, I thought I would drop the fics I wrote for [ profile] fandom_stocking.

This post really deserves my 'Squee' icon, you know why? Because I have lots of goodies in my [ profile] fandom_stocking!

From [ profile] wiccanslyr, two very awesome DW drabbles in which Donna is as awesome as only she can be! All because of the coffee and All because of the bees, part 2. Have I mentioned lately how much I love Donna Noble?

From [ profile] yhlee, a delightfully cute Angel and Faith drabble, Let the Eat Cake. It funny, and just the way those two would be.

From [ profile] velvetmouse, some old school Mulder&Scully, with a dead Immortal thrown into the mix.

From [ profile] zangetsugirl, a short but sweet Moonlight drabble which was deceptively chocked full of bittersweet, angst and might have beens right along side of life affirming hope.

From [ profile] storydivagirl, old school Gibbs/DiNozzo with worried!overorotective!Gibbs, a couple of head slaps and some elevator action. Can there really be too much elevator fic in NCIS?

From [ profile] zeldaophelia, I got genderswapped Danny/Lindsay (CSI:NY), learning to lean on each other in the wake of Dannie's pregnancy. My Recent Silence, Part 2 It was a really great slice of life and totally in character for both of them, even genderswapped. :-)

I also got a couple batches of icons, a couple vouchers to redeem for fics/fanmixes of my own choosing, and some general holiday cheer.

In the giving department, I wrote 8 ficlets, made some icons and dustjackets for other people, and really surprised myself with an unexpected burst of creativity. My muses are waking up, and just in time to shower other people with gifties. :-)

I'll probably post those gifties later tonight or tomorrow, after I know all the recipients have had a chance to respond to them.

I find myself in need of a full time NCIS beta reader, preferably someone who also is fluent in Highlander: the Series.

I'm intending to end my year long fanfic hiatus with a crossover series where one of the NCIS team is an Immortal. Guest appearances from my favorite Immies likely. Fics will most likely be in the 500 - 1000 word range, but could go long if a decent plotty plotty presents itself.

I have one shortfic for the series that needs a beta right now, actually, as it's a belated Christmas gift for a friend.

NCIS Dream

Had a dream last night that has stayed with me all day...

In which Jenny Sheppard is the bad guy? )

You know?  I could make a fanfic out of it if I could figure out the minor details like how Jenny's not dead and why she's gone and teamed up with Angela Lansbury.  And why they killed Fornell and Ducky.

Well, it's that time of year again.... time to look back and see what I've written this year. Last year, as some of you may recall, I wrote a said little 8 fics and vowed to write more than that.

Here's what I have for 2008.

This coming year is going to be a little bit different for me.  I am planning to take a 'fanfic hiatus' to focus more writing original fiction.  I use the term 'planning to' loosely because I don't know if I can stick to it... much like New Years resolutions or something.  My plan (again, in the loosest sense of the word) is to write a series of short fics or drabbles starring the main characters from what I hope will be next year's NaNoWriMo novel... a detective series about an ex-con turned private investigator.  I may ask my flist (those of you who don't read this and unfriend me because of the impending threat of a fanfic hiatus, that is) to give me prompts for those ficlets from time to time.

Also, I'll heavily stress that I have no clue if I can or will actually stick to that whole 'fanfic hiatus' thing.  If the fic strikes me, I may just have to write it.  Also, there are b-day ficlets aand things like that to consider. Terms like 'planning on' are... more like guidelines anyway.  *g*
